Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems

Yesterday it was announced that a new body was being formed called SHAAP (Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems). It is being chaired by Dr. Bruce Ritson , an excellent choice, and it is under the auspices of the Royal Medical Colleges and funded by the Scottish Executive. This has the potential to considerably improve medical and treatment services for alcoholics. Enclosed are cuttings. Also a piece by the First Minister on residential rehab in which he wants more services for drug addicts. How ironic when I have been campaigning over the last few weeks for greater use to be made of our beds at Castle Craig. Finally a letter from myself on the dangers of methadone which is in today’s Scotsman.

This move comes a month after Health Minister Andy Kerr announced a strategy for tackling alcohol abuse. Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) is particularly worried about low-cost drink promotions in supermarkets and off-licences.

Methadone is a real problem these days, is a dangerous drug and people are not aware of this. Ana Nicole Smith died from a methadone overdose I there are still many public cases that include this drug. Where will it stop? Methadone detox can't help unless they want to.

Most drug detox centers simply provide treatment to avoid physical withdrawal to alcohol & other drugs.

I don't see the relevance of that comment. It's obviously just a ploy to get a backlink to a Narconon Church of Scientology drug rehab and improve its search engine rankings. I think you should warn people from the outset that Narconon believes that psychiatrists are the enemy. Especially when commenting on a site of a world class facility like Castle Craig.

I can’t explain why, but it looks like the number of those suffering from alcohol problems is rising. We should promote more the anti-addiction campaigns. We have to teach the other people around us how they can be strong without looking for strength in alcohol.

What about drug rehabilitation? I am concerned about the alarming increase rate of drug addicts. This problem should be solved as soon as possible by anti-drug campaigns and investments to help build rehabs and fight drug lords.
